There has been a fair amount of coverage recently on Rogers' One Number app/program. One Number is a VoIP service which allows you to call and text other people from your computer, using only a data connection. By allowing you to sync your contact lists between devices, you always have all your contacts close at hand. A video chat function is also available, helping the app to become an all-in-one suite which seeks to keep people connected. More over, you may use the Follow Me list to make your other devices (ie. web app, home phone, cell phone) pick up your calls from the number you want to be reached it.
While Rogers does have many different functions within this one application, there are many other VoIP programs to choose from, for customers of other providers: see our VoIP blog post for more details. For those who don't already sync their contacts using Gmail or iCloud, many VoIP applications use the contact list already on your device, to save you the trouble. Furthermore, many VoIP apps are centred around your mobile device, while Rogers One Number is created more for home use on your computer. While it boasts more functionality that many other desktop apps, there are better choices for mobile use.
If Rogers customers are interested in using this service, there are several things to be aware of. When traveling, the Follow Me list can be used with your US number, to easily call-forward calls from your Canadian number to your US one, such as if you were using our SIM card or Breeze phone. However, this is a paid service by your provider and they will charge you a forwarding fee. Furthermore, it is very important to see that One Number requires a lot of data to run. Many VoIP apps require 1MB per minute for voice functionality: racking up your data bill very quickly, if you are on a regular Canadian provider. To combat this, we suggest using our Liberty device, to maximize your data capabilities, without being charged an arm and a leg. Video chat also requires a strong connection: something the Liberty device specializes in.
