Costly roaming rates are a sore point for many Canadian mobile-phone users. Roam Mobility Inc. says it has a better way. Roaming rates have become a hot-button issue with consumers hit with high charges for using their phones when travelling outside the country. Roam Mobility and other new players in the Canadian wireless industry see an opportunity to capitalize on the consumer angst.

Eliminating outrageous roaming fees
Philipp Postrehovsky was hit with $500 in roaming fees on his last cell phone bill after taking two trips south of the border. The Vancouverite had uploaded a few photos of Seattle's Space Needle on New Year's Eve and that alone cost him $80. "You just feel mad, because you feel it's just outrageous right?" he said. Postrehovsky is among many cell phone users being burned by massive roaming rates and data fees.

Roam Mobility plans to launch the service in partnership with T-Mobile USA on Jan. 16. The company will provide the service through its continent-wide network, built for use by its Canadian customers only, that piggybacks on T-Mobile's massive servers.

Roam Mobility puts end to high roaming charges
If you’ve ever used your smartphone or cellphone while travelling in the U.S. on business or pleasure, you may have experienced roaming shock. Roam Mobility, a Vancouver startup, will launch a new service Monday that puts an end to high roaming charges.
The new service – a partnership between Roam Mobility and T-Mobile in the U.S. – is designed for Canadian tourists and business travellers who want to stay connected while travelling to the U.S., but who are afraid of racking up roaming charges.
